An award-winning choreographer, director, and educator, renowned for his dynamic and visually stunning choreography style. He has earned numerous awards, including the Grand Prix Award at the Dance Grand Prix Europe in 2014 and 2015, and the Best Choreographer Award at the Dance Grand Prix in Barcelona. His choreographies have also won him other accolades including Best Contemporary and Ethnic Choreographic Work at international dance festivals. Drawing from his visual arts training during his younger years, and his widespread exposure to a multitude of dance styles, he constantly strives to push choreographic boundaries with his bold creative direction.
Born in Singapore, Dan Kwoh was trained from the age of 11 in Chinese Dance and developed an interest in Dance Choreography. A recipient of the Georgette Chen Arts Scholarship by the National Arts Council, Dan completed his professional training at the LASALLE College of the Arts while also training at the Singapore Ballet Academy (SBA) where he received the SBA Scholarship in 2011, 2012 and 2013. During this period, he also guest performed for the Singapore Dance Theatre in Stanton Welch’s Madame Butterfly (2003) and Jeffrey Tan’s The Nutcracker (2005).
Dan has received numerous commissions to choreograph at prestigious events, including the Inaugural Asian Youth Games Opening 2009, National Day Parade (2005/2006/2010), Singapore Arts Festival Singapore Youth Festival Opening (2008/2012/2013) and Chingay Parade (2007/2008/2012/2017/2022). He has also represented Singapore in premiering his work at the Global Dance Summit 2012 in Taiwan. In 2022, Dan was commissioned a new work “Grief: for “THIRD SPACE” Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts Diploma in Dance annual production.
As an educator, Dan teaches in numerous local dance organisations and educational institutions. He currently an Adjunct Lecturer with the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts Faculty of Dance, and was also a founder of SMU INDANCITY, serving as their Artistic and Resident Choreographer for 12 years.
In 2014, he founded dACADEMY Singapore, as the Artistic Director, pioneering a pre-professional training programme, dTEAM. Under his mentorship, dTEAM, and his students, have won numerous awards across various genres in competitions such as the Asia Pacific Dance Competition, the CSTD Regional Dance Competition and Get the Beat Asia.
His prolific career as a veteran dance educator, has seen him groom hundreds of dance students over two decades, many of whom go on to further their study in dance at a professional level in well-known vocational institutions worldwide such as the Falmouth University, Trinity Laban, LASALLE College of the Arts, Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, New Zealand School of Dance and Northern School of Contemporary Dance. He takes great pride in his role of nurturing the next generation of passionate young dancers.
